Accelerated Reader Programme

Pupils from 1st to 6th class have access to the Accelerated Reader program. This is an online program which motivates children to read independently and supports them in improving their reading skills. Each pupil has their own username and password for their account which also holds their virtual bookshelf allowing them to see their reading achievements.

At the beginning of the school year pupils are assessed to determine their reading ability. They are then encouraged to choose books independently from our library. Once they have finished a book they take an online comprehension quiz. These quizzes allow pupils to earn points towards gaining a certificate. On completion of a quiz the program will also recommend further titles to read.

Certificates serve as a motivating benchmark for pupils. The following certificates are awarded: Ready Reader, Independent Reader, Rising Reader, Super Reader, Advanced Reader, Star Reader, Classic Reader and Honours Reader.

Teachers also set individual and class targets. These include achieving a certain points target, reading for a set period of time each day or week, reading a set number of books in a month, achieving a certain average score in quizzes and reading to a certain book level.

We also have an Accelerated Reader board which showcases our reading achievements. This is updated monthly. The names of pupils who have read over 1,000, over 10,000 and over 100,000 words are displayed here. When a pupil reads over 1,000,000 words he/she receives a special Accelerated Reader Millionaire certificate and a book token.

Since September, our pupils have read 4,189 books and over 45 million words on Accelerated Reader. Some of our favourite books included: Little Chimp and the Bees by Jenny Giles, The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl, The Holiday by Roderick Hunt, Under the Hawthorn Tree by Marita Conlon-McKenna, Bad Dad by David Walliams and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Getaway by Jeff Kinney.
